Part 1: Introduction to Digital Transformation

Digital transformation is universally acknowledged both in academia and industry as a paradigm for leveraging digital technologies to enhance business operations. It involves the strategic application of digital capabilities to processes, products, and assets, aiming to boost efficiency, elevate customer value, mitigate risk, and discover new revenue opportunities [1]. It is critical for enterprises in today’s world due to the rapid pace of technological advancement and the changing dynamics of global markets. Here are key reasons why embracing digital transformation is essential:

  • Competitive Advantage and Enhanced Customer Experience: Embracing digital transformation enables businesses to leverage cutting-edge technologies to improve operational efficiency, innovate product offerings, and provide personalized, seamless customer service. This differentiation is crucial for maintaining a competitive edge in the market[2-5].
  • Operational Efficiency: By incorporating technologies such as AI, IoT, and cloud computing, enterprises can achieve greater efficiencies, reduce operational costs, and enhance productivity. This not only improves the business’s agility to respond to market changes but also supports sustainable growth [4, 5].
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: Digital transformation equips organizations with the tools to collect, analyze, and leverage vast amounts of data. This data-driven insight aids in better decision-making, helping to predict market trends and make informed and timely strategic moves [5].

While digital transformation offers substantial business benefits such as a competitive edge, heightened operational efficiency, and insightful data-driven decision-making, it also introduces several significant challenges enterprises must overcome. These challenges include:

  • Lack of Understanding and Adaptation to User Expectations: As technology and markets evolve, user expectations also shift. Companies must not only adapt but also understand these changing demands to remain relevant and competitive[5-7].
  • Resistance to Change Among Employees: One of the major hurdles in digital transformation is overcoming employees’ resistance to change. This includes reluctance to adopt new technologies and methodologies, which can hinder the seamless integration and full utilization of innovative solutions [4, 6, 8, 9].
  • Difficult to Achieve Alignment Across Departments: Digital transformation often requires new collaborative efforts across various departments that may have traditionally operated in silos. Achieving alignment and fostering a cohesive environment that supports cross-departmental collaboration is essential, yet challenging, for leveraging the full potential of digital innovations [6, 9, 10].

Part 2: The Role of Design Thinking in Digital Transformation

Design Thinking has established itself as a robust approach for managing creativity and mitigating bias in innovation projects. This methodology is particularly effective when the aim is to ensure that foundational digital technologies facilitate a digital transformation that not only meets but anticipates user needs, thereby crafting more valuable solutions for end-users [7].

Extensive research confirms that Design Thinking significantly enhances the effectiveness of digital transformation efforts. [1, 2, 4-7, 11-16]. Numerous prestigious companies, including Airbnb, Apple, SAP, Netflix, Adidas, Ford, GE Healthcare, and PepsiCo, have successfully harnessed this approach in their digital transformation initiatives [14]. Furthermore, the integration of Design Thinking with Agile methodologies has proven to accelerate these transformations, by increasing organizational agility and responsiveness [8, 10, 17-19]. This methodology is particularly impactful in the banking and insurance sectors, not only in Hong Kong and China but also on a global scale [2, 3, 7, 20-24].

In addition, analysis of publications on the topic of digital transformation in companies reveals a growing utilization of design thinking and related approaches. Although not all publications explicitly use the term “design thinking,” they often detail processes that involve finding innovative solutions during organizational changes, highlight the necessity for forming multidisciplinary teams and emphasize the importance of creative thinking. From these descriptions, it is evident that the attributes typical of design thinking are being applied, underscoring its significance in driving successful transformations. Below, a table is provided to display all relevant information comprehensively. [4].

When applied strategically, design thinking can catalyze profound transformations and yield substantial economic benefits across diverse industries. In Hong Kong, numerous digital transformation projects across sectors such as banking, insurance, hospitality, transportation, and government have effectively harnessed the power of Design Thinking to drive significant business impact. This strategic approach has resulted in improved customer satisfaction, increased revenue, expanded market share, and enhanced brand reputation [23-30].
