[Insight #1] Two Distinct Yet Complementary Innovation Perspectives

The core spirit of the Design Thinking method is human-centered. It starts from real users’ emotions, pain points, and unspoken needs. Through empathy, collaborative solution building, and iterative testing, it explores answers in ambiguous and uncertain contexts.

The core spirit of the ISO 56001 Standard is a structured system for innovation governance. It relies on clearly defined roles, processes, resource allocation, and performance indicators. It ensures that innovation activities are traceable, auditable, scalable, and continuously improved (International Organization for Standardization, 2024).

Multiple international cases—including OKI, Airbus, Dell Technologies, Karolinska University Hospital, and the Center for Digital Innovation Lower Saxony—suggest that these two perspectives often appear to be in tension. Yet, in practice, they function as irreplaceable and mutually reinforcing partners.


[Insight #2] Human-Centered: The Warmth of Design Thinking Filling the Gaps in Standards

ISO 56001 deliberately does not prescribe specific ideation techniques. Instead, it leaves space for organizations to fill in themselves (International Organization for Standardization, 2024). This white space is exactly where the human-centered spirit of design thinking plays an irreplaceable role.

In Japan, OKI Electric embeds design thinking into co-creation workshops within its Innovation Management System (IMS). Customer and partner needs directly drive innovation directions, rather than relying only on process documents (OKI, 2025a, 2025b).

In Spain, ILUNION Hotels’ “I’m Curious” innovation training program injects the empathy and discovery spirit of design thinking into frontline service innovation in the hotel sector (Grupo Social ONCE, 2025).

This human-centered warmth is a key driver. It helps ISO 56001 move beyond document-level requirements toward genuine team engagement and mindset change.


[Insight #3] Structured Governance: ISO 56001 Gives Design Thinking a More Enduring Backbone

The creative outcomes of design thinking workshops are more likely to become long-term organizational capabilities when supported by institutionalized tracking and continuity mechanisms. ISO 56001’s structured governance provides exactly this kind of support.

ISO 56001 is the international standard for innovation management systems, comprising 10 clauses. Clauses 1–3 set the scope, references, and common terminology. Clauses 4–7 define the organizational context, leadership, and planning required to sustain innovation. Clause 8 specifies how innovation is planned and run in operations. Clauses 9–10 focus on performance evaluation and continual improvement. Together, they give design thinking a disciplined, enduring governance backbone.

Mott MacDonald has a “siding” mechanism to retain ideas not adopted immediately. It ensures that ideas generated continue to receive attention and do not disappear once the workshops end (R&D Today, 2024). In Saudi Arabia, El Seif Engineering uses KPI frameworks and monthly governance reviews. It converts ideas into traceable organizational capabilities (BSI Group, 2022). In Germany, CorneXion uses structured questionnaire assessments to redefine role responsibilities and meeting structures. It enables innovation to evolve from ad-hoc events into institutionalized processes.

In Spain, Gestamp’s AENOR certification emphasizes that its innovation activities are not isolated actions. They are embedded in structured, cross-disciplinary collaboration across its global R&D centers (Asociación Española de Normalización, 2025).

This structured backbone allows the impressive outcomes of design thinking workshops to be extended, accumulated, and continuously leveraged. It prevents them from remaining one-off activities.


[Insight #4] Human-Centered Meets Structured Governance: The Soil for Innovation Culture

Design thinking is not only a set of creativity tools. It is a deliberate way to reshape the relationship among people, problems, and the organization. Through systematic empathy and dialogue, it gives frontline employees, internal experts, and stakeholders the chance to be truly heard. It gradually breaks the implicit culture that “innovation belongs only to the R&D department”. When innovation discussions move from abstract slogans back to concrete pain points and real contexts, they also weaken doubts about “innovation for innovation’s sake”. Innovation then becomes a practical means to support daily operations, customer value, and public missions.

When this type of human-centered exploration connects with structured governance, including clear role division, decision points, and resource mechanisms, a new sense of psychological safety emerges inside the organization. People know they can put forward immature ideas. They also understand how these ideas will be evaluated and incubated. Over time, this cycle of “daring to speak, willing to try, and able to learn” becomes the essential soil in which an innovation culture can take root.

The case of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) shows that even in government agencies, where innovation has traditionally faced strong resistance, combining design thinking methods with the ISO 56002 framework can still drive a comprehensive shift in management mindsets. It generates both incremental and transformational innovation outcomes, rather than remaining only at the level of documentation (World Scientific Publishing, 2024).


[Insight #5] AI Agents on the Design Thinking Side: 6 Human-Centered Roles

Building on the synergy between human-centered exploration and structured governance, a dedicated network of 150 AI agents for Design Thinking has been configured and organized into six human-centered roles, with each agent performing a distinct, complementary function at different stages of the innovation lifecycle—empathizing with user needs, accelerating insight generation, sharpening solution design, and strengthening execution end-to-end.

On the design thinking side, AI agents are divided according to the six stages of the “6D Double Diamond” model:

  • Challenge Delineator: Corresponds to the “Discover” starting point of the first diamond. It clarifies problem boundaries and removes biased assumptions. It ensures the team focuses on challenges that are truly worth solving.
  • Design Researcher: Consolidates user interviews, observational data, and market signals. It turns fragmented qualitative data into actionable insights.
  • Persona Drafter: Automatically generates draft user personas based on research data. It speeds up the transition from the empathize stage to the define stage.
  • Idea Developer: Supports idea expansion and convergence assessment in the divergent-thinking phase. It corresponds to the “Develop” stage of the second diamond.
  • Prototype Designer: Helps quickly generate low-cost prototype concepts or simulated scenarios. It supports iterations before testing.
  • Change Driver: Corresponds to the implementation stage at the end of the double diamond process. It helps convert validated solutions into executable change actions.

These six agents embed the warmth and exploratory logic of design thinking into AI workflows, allowing machines to support empathy, creativity, and iteration rather than merely optimize predefined processes.


[Insight #6] A Shared Operational Spine: Clause 8 of ISO 56001 and the 6D Design Thinking Model

Following the six human-centered AI roles on the design thinking side, the next question is: How do their activities line up with the formal “operations of innovation” required by ISO 56001? The answer is that Clause 8 of ISO 56001 and the 6D Design Thinking model are not competing workflows—they describe the same operational spine in two different languages.

Clause 8 structures innovation into the following: Identify Opportunities, Create Concepts, Validate Concepts, Develop Solutions, and Deploy Solutions. The 6D model expresses the execution flow as: Discover, Define, Develop, Deliver, with Determine and Drive framing the broader system. These two flows align as follows:

  • Identify Opportunities Discover & Define
    Teams uncover user contexts and pain points (Discover) and sharpen them into clear challenge statements (Define).
  • Create & Validate Concepts Develop
    Concept creation and validation are carried out through iterative co-creation, prototyping, and testing during the Develop phase.
  • Develop & Deploy Solutions Deliver
    Mature concepts are engineered, integrated into operations, and released to users in the Deliver phase.

Around this operational core:

  • Determine ↔ Clauses 4–7: Determine links to context, leadership, planning, and support—ensuring that what we choose to work on is strategically and organizationally grounded.
  • Drive ↔ Clauses 8–10: Drive connects ongoing operations (Clause 8) with performance evaluation and improvement (Clauses 9–10), ensuring that solutions are sustained, measured, and continuously improved.

This shared spine is what allows the same AI agents to operate as one dual-engine system: the design thinking agents (Insight #5) move naturally along Discover-Define–Develop–Deliver, while the ISO 56001 governance agents (Insight #7) sit on the same backbone to classify, document, monitor, and improve each step. In practice, every human-centered activity can therefore be captured as a compliant, auditable operation inside the innovation management system.


[Insight #7] AI Agents on the ISO 56001 Side: 5 Governance Roles

While the design thinking agent network focuses on empathy, insight, and creative exploration, organizations also need a parallel AI backbone that ensures ideas can be governed, resourced, and scaled. On the ISO 56001 side, AI agents translate the language of creativity into the language of systems, risk, and performance. They ensure that innovation activities remain aligned with strategy, compliant with standards, and continuously improved over time.

On the ISO 56001 side, 5 roles of AI agents are divided according to the structured clauses of the standard:

  • Organizational Context Analyst [Clause 4]: Corresponds to the “Context of the organization” clause. It continuously scans the internal and external environment and stakeholder needs.
  • Change Leadership Manager [Clause 5]: Corresponds to the “Leadership” clause. It helps communicate the vision and track cross-functional resource commitments.
  • Innovation Planner [Clause 6]: Corresponds to the “Planning” clause. It automatically classifies ideas and links them to strategic objectives.
  • Innovation Supporter [Clause 7]: Corresponds to the “Support” clause. It answers IMS process questions in real time and lowers participation barriers.
  • Performance Evaluation and Improvement Manager [Clauses 9 and 10]: Corresponds to the “Performance evaluation” and “Improvement” clauses. It automatically monitors KPI achievement and proposes improvement suggestions.

These five governance-oriented agents give design thinking outcomes an institutional backbone. They help ensure that promising ideas are not only generated but also aligned, resourced, monitored, and improved within a formal innovation management system.


[Insight #8] 11 Roles of AI Agents: Orchestrating the Dual-Engine AI Agent Network

Design thinking provides AI with human-centered context and exploratory logic for learning. ISO 56001 provides AI with a structured framework and governance boundaries for operation. The dual-engine agent network, formed by these 11 roles, serves as the real-time translator and accelerator between the two. It transforms innovation management from a tug-of-war between “ideas” and “systems” into a self-reinforcing cycle that is AI-driven, human-centered, and structurally rigorous.

These two agent networks do not operate separately. They form a continuous chain of collaboration. The implementation plans generated by the design thinking side’s Change Driver agent connect directly to the ISO side’s Innovation Planner for strategic alignment and resource prioritization. The ISO side’s Innovation Supporter, in turn, provides real-time process guidance. It reduces the friction experienced by the Prototype Designer and Idea Developer agents on the design thinking side when operating within compliance boundaries.

For organizations planning their innovation transformation journey, the key question is not “Should we choose human-centered design thinking or structured ISO certification?” The real question is “How can we make the two reinforce each other and use a dual-engine AI agent network to accelerate their integration?”

Design thinking addresses the fundamental question, “Where do ideas come from?” ISO 56001 addresses the structural question of “How are ideas organized, measured, and sustained?” A clearly defined AI agent network can shift collaboration from labor-intensive to scalable and real-time. When design thinking, ISO 56001, and AI agents advance together, inspiration can be reliably transformed into scalable and sustainable organizational capabilities.


[Insight #9] Practical Evidence from SMEs: A Business View of Synergy

Most of the above cases involve large multinational corporations. However, for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with limited resources, combining design thinking with ISO 56001 often delivers even higher returns on investment. In their article “Enabling Innovation Capabilities: A Design Thinking Toolbox for SME Strategic Transformation,” Demir, Saur-Amaral, and Polónia focus on SMEs. They highlight common practical challenges in introducing design thinking, such as limited resources, management skepticism, and the lack of a clear operating framework (Demir et al., 2025).

To address these pain points, the project team developed a web-based “Design Thinking and Innovation Strategy Toolbox.” This toolbox was designed in alignment with the ISO 56001:2024 standard and transforms identified obstacles and critical success factors into practical, ready-to-use modules. The research team also invited 14 consultants to conduct multiple rounds of Delphi-based professional assessment. They focused on ease of use, alignment with ISO requirements, and fit with real business contexts. The results show strong consensus among experts on the toolbox’s clarity, flexibility, and suitability for typical SME constraints. They also suggested directions for further enhancement, including visual design and ongoing feedback mechanisms (Demir et al., 2025).

This work matters because it uses rigorous expert assessment and practice-oriented design to show that design thinking and ISO 56001 are not exclusive to large, well-resourced enterprises. Through modular and low-barrier tool design, SMEs can systematically build innovation capabilities, achieve strategic alignment, and strengthen organizational momentum, even when time, budgets, and internal expertise are constrained (Demir et al., 2025).


Conclusion: Leveraging Dual-Engine AI Agents to Accelerate Innovation Outcomes

For organizations planning their innovation transformation journey, the central question is no longer “Should we choose human-centered design thinking or structured ISO certification?” but rather “How do we orchestrate both—and use a dual-engine AI agent network to amplify their combined impact while keeping people at the center?”

Insights #1–#4 show that design thinking does more than generate ideas: it anchors innovation in real human emotions, pain points, and aspirations, while ISO 56001 provides the robust governance backbone and cultural foundation needed to sustain this human-centered intent at scale. Insights #5–#7 then translate this synergy into an 11-role AI agent architecture that connects empathetic exploration with disciplined execution in real time. Insight #8 demonstrates, through SME evidence, that this human-centered yet structured approach is both practical and high-impact, even in resource-constrained environments.

Design thinking primarily addresses three core questions: For Whom do ideas matter most? Why are they meaningful now? What problems or opportunities are we truly solving?

ISO 56001 complements this by focusing on the remaining three dimensions: When in the user or customer journey should ideas be resourced and implemented? Where in the organizational and ecosystem context should they be embedded? And How are those ideas organized, measured, and sustained over time?

When design thinking, ISO 56001, and AI agents advance in tandem, inspiration is no longer accidental. It becomes a repeatable, governable, and strategically aligned organizational capability—one that remains firmly rooted in human needs while being reinforced by rigorous systems and intelligent automation.
