The Role of This Tool in the Second Phase of the Design Thinking Method

Behavioral Immersion focuses on directly observing and, where possible, participating in real user behaviour in their natural context—seeing what people actually do, not just what they say they do. In Discover, it reveals routines, workarounds, and mismatches between official processes and lived practice, uncovering habitual patterns, shortcuts, errors, and improvisations that indicate unmet needs and hidden constraints. This grounds your understanding of the problem in observable evidence of behaviour.
Behavioral Immersion is especially suited to workflow‑ and routine‑heavy products and services, such as frontline operations (retail staff, call centres, nurses, field technicians), back‑office processes (claims handling, accounting, logistics), household and lifestyle activities (shopping, cleaning, commuting, health management), and digital products that are used as part of daily or weekly routines. It’s particularly useful when issues manifest as non‑use, workarounds, policy violations, or inconsistent adoption of tools and services.
People may alter their behaviour when observed (the Hawthorne effect) or perform “by the book” rather than as they normally do, which can mask underlying problems and workarounds. Access and privacy constraints might restrict what you can see (e.g., confidential tasks, sensitive user groups), and short observation windows may miss rare but important behaviours. Your interpretation of what you see is shaped by your own assumptions, which may lead to misattributing causes or missing invisible drivers (social, organisational, or emotional).

The Procedure for Using This Design Thinking Tool
Step (1) Clarify behaviours of interest: Define which tasks or behaviours you want to understand (e.g., “nurses managing medication rounds,” “users checking account balances”).
Step (2) Select contexts and participants: Choose representative settings and user types where these behaviours occur naturally.
Step (3) Obtain consent and set expectations: Secure permissions and explain your observer role and confidentiality to participants and stakeholders.
Step (4) Create an observation guide: List what to watch for: triggers, sequence of actions, tools used, workarounds, interruptions, handovers, errors, help‑seeking.
Step (5) Shadow users in context: Quietly follow and observe users performing their tasks, intervening minimally and taking detailed notes.
Step (6) Capture artefacts and environments: Document tools, checklists, screens, forms, and other artefacts used in the behaviour.
Step (7) Ask short clarifying questions: When appropriate, ask brief questions like “What are you doing here?” “Why this way?” to understand invisible reasoning.
Step (8) Record deviations and workarounds: Note any departures from the official process, improvised solutions, or informal rules and their triggers.
Step (9) Debrief shortly after with users: Hold a brief conversation to confirm your interpretations and capture their reflections on what you observed.
Step (10) Synthesize behavioural patterns and implications: Cluster observations into patterns (e.g., “constant interruptions,” “paper‑digital double work,” “informal risk checks”) and translate them into user needs and problem statements.
Important Note:
In practice, “immersion” is not a single, isolated research method, but a mindset and set of practices for entering the user’s world as fully as possible. In a real user‑research project, you will usually combine multiple types of immersion. For example, you might start with Cognitive Immersion to observe how users process information and make decisions, then add Emotional Immersion to evoke their anxiety, frustration, or hope in key moments.
You may also use Spatial and Sensory Immersion in the real environment to see how space, noise, light, and other sensory factors shape behaviour, while Behavioral, System, and Ethnographic Immersion help you grasp everyday routines, organisational processes, and cultural context. By combining multiple immersion methods, you gain a more complete picture of the persona’s pain points, needs, expectations, and constraints in real life and across the wider system, and you avoid making design decisions based on a single, partial perspective.
