In the Deliver phase, paper prototypes act as low‑cost, high‑speed tools for validating detailed interaction flows, content placement, and service steps before committing to higher‑fidelity builds.
They allow teams to simulate screens, forms, dialogs, or service touchpoints with real users in a tangible, editable format, capturing usability issues, misunderstood labels, and missing steps early, when changes are cheap. Paper prototypes also make it easier for stakeholders less comfortable with abstract wireframes to respond to something concrete, helping align cross‑functional teams on the final experience and reducing rework during development and implementation.
Paper prototypes are most suitable for digital products and service interfaces such as mobile apps, web portals, enterprise systems, self‑service kiosks, and form‑heavy workflows, as well as service blueprints for call centres, branch experiences, and back‑office processes. They are especially powerful when refining information architecture, interaction flows, and scripts for human‑delivered services (e.g., onboarding conversations, advisory sessions) where content and sequence matter more than visual polish or technology.

The Procedure for Using This Design Thinking Tool
Step 1: Clearly define the key user journey or scenario you want to test in Deliver, focusing on the most critical tasks or decisions that must work reliably at launch.
Step 2: Sketch each step of the journey on separate sheets or cards, including interfaces, instructions, decision points, and key data or content, keeping visuals simple so attention stays on flow and clarity rather than aesthetics.
Step 3: Run moderated walkthroughs with representative users, physically “changing the screen” by swapping pages as they progress, and inviting them to think aloud while you observe where they hesitate, misunderstand, or backtrack.
Step 4: Capture all feedback directly on the paper artefacts—circling confusing elements, annotating missing information, and marking steps that feel redundant or heavy.
Step 5: Consolidate insights into design decisions, update the paper flow or a digital equivalent, and use the refined version as a precise blueprint for higher‑fidelity prototypes or build specifications.
