The Role of This Tool in the Fourth Phase of the Design Thinking Method

In the Develop phase, Popcorn brainstorming helps an individual rapidly generate a wide variety of raw ideas, variations, and “what‑if” options around an emerging concept before any serious evaluation or convergence begins.
It supports divergent thinking by encouraging spontaneous, unfiltered idea generation in response to a clear challenge, ensuring that you explore beyond obvious solutions and capture early flashes of insight that can later be refined into stronger concepts. Used early in Develop, Popcorn ensures there is enough volume and diversity in the idea pool before you start clustering, combining, and selecting directions for prototyping.
Popcorn is most suitable for broad, open‑ended ideation challenges where you want many ideas quickly without worrying yet about feasibility—such as “new ways to onboard customers,” “ways to reduce waiting time,” “ideas for value‑added services,” or “features that would delight this segment.” It is particularly useful when you are starting the Develop phase and need to break out of blank‑page paralysis and build momentum.
Popcorn is constrained by its lack of structure and evaluation; it can easily produce noisy, repetitive, or low‑quality ideas, and it does not help you judge feasibility or prioritise. It also relies heavily on the individual’s existing knowledge and imagination, so blind spots and biases remain unchallenged unless you later combine it with more structured tools or team input.
Remark: 150 AI Agents of Design Thinking 3.0 were launched in January 2026, accelerating delivery by up to 95% and achieving 90% accuracy in identifying and clustering user needs, thereby enabling rigorous, evidence‑based strategic decision‑making. (For details, please click here)
The Procedure for Using This Design Thinking Tool
Step 1: Frame a clear “How might I…?” or “How might we…?” question that captures the core challenge for the Develop phase, and write it at the top of your page.
Step 2: Set a strict timebox (e.g., 5–10 minutes), commit to suspending judgment, and begin writing every idea that comes to mind as separate bullets or sticky notes, no matter how rough or unrealistic.
Step 3: Keep writing continuously during the timebox, deliberately pushing past the first obvious ideas into more unusual, playful, or extreme options, accepting that many will never be used.
Step 4: When time is up, quickly scan and group ideas into loose themes (e.g., “digital,” “human support,” “policy changes,” “partnerships”) without yet deciding which are best.
Step 5: Select a few promising clusters to explore further in subsequent Develop activities (e.g., mind‑mapping, sketching, or team workshops), parking the rest in an “idea backlog” for later reference.
Tips for Facilitators: The facilitator should sharpen a single, clear “How might we…?” question that is concrete enough to focus ideas but broad enough to invite many directions, then write it prominently on a template or board for the individual to use. They should set a strict, short timebox and communicate that quantity beats quality at this stage, explicitly normalising rough, “bad,” or unrealistic ideas to reduce self‑censorship. The facilitator also prepares a simple capture format (blank sheet, sticky notes, or digital board) and, ideally, a short warm‑up example to demonstrate the pace and non‑judgmental nature of Popcorn before the participant starts.
