The GS1 IoT Hackathon 2026 webinar, held on 29 January 2026, was designed to prepare hackathon participants with the right mindset and frameworks before they start building solutions. The objective was clear: to go beyond technical IoT skills and equip participants with innovation methodologies to create solutions that are not only feasible but also desirable and sustainable.

At the start of the webinar, Mr. David Chung, Managing Partner at InnoEdge Consulting, introduced the evolution from Classical Design Thinking (DT 1.0) to AI-Empowered Design Thinking (DT 3.0). He explained how AI tools and data can enhance traditional human-centred design to generate deeper insights, more robust ideas, and faster iterations. Through the Sham Shui Po Fabric Market case and an overview of AI Design Thinking x Systems Thinking, he showed participants how to look at user needs, community context, and technology opportunities in an integrated way, rather than treating them as separate steps.

To deepen this learning, Mr. Michael Tong, a Partner at InnoEdge Consulting, shared real-world case studies that demonstrated the power of combining AI Design Thinking with Systems Thinking. He presented how Johns Hopkins Hospital redesigned the patient experience through a systemic, end-to-end approach, while Mr. Paul Lee, Senior Partner at InnoEdge Consulting, discussed leverage points and rebound effects in the GoMore Car Rental case, highlighting how changes in one part of a system can create both intended and unintended impacts.
