Event Highlights

On 7 June 2025, the AI Design Thinking Method Class brought together innovators, industry professionals, and AI enthusiasts to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in design thinking. Co-organized by DesignThinkers Academy (DTA) Hong Kong and the Project Management Institute (PMI) Hong Kong Chapter, the event provided hands-on learning and actionable insights for creating human-centered, AI-driven solutions.

The session opened with an inspiring speech by Ms. Christine Yau, President of PMI Hong Kong, who emphasized the importance of integrating AI into the design thinking process to solve today’s complex challenges effectively.

The class was led by Mr. David Chung, Dean of DTA Hong Kong, who walked participants through how AI can amplify creativity, streamline processes, and improve problem-solving in professional settings.

The Synergy Between Design Thinking and Project Management

Design Thinking and Project Management are deeply interconnected, as both frameworks emphasize a structured, iterative approach to problem-solving and achieving objectives. According to the Design Thinking Project Management Framework outlined by de Salles Canfield, Moreira, and Bernardes (2021), Design Thinking complements Project Management by integrating human-centered innovation into the planning and execution of projects. PMI highlights how Design Thinking enhances agile methodologies by fostering collaboration, empathy, and iterative prototyping, driving innovative solutions in project workflows. This synergy enables organizations to not only meet project goals but also deliver meaningful, user-focused outcomes.

Real-World Case Studies

The class included discussions of impactful case studies showcasing AI-powered design thinking in action:

  1. HSBC Hong Kong: Enhancing User Experience for PayMe
  2. GE Healthcare: Human-Centered Pediatric Checkups
  3. Greater Bay Area Railway Company: Hidden Needs of Pregnant Commuters
  4. United Airlines: “United Breaks Guitars” Case
  5. Sham Shui Po Fabric Market: Community Optimization
  6. Hong Kong Airlines: Creating the “Fly Beyond” Passenger Experience

Interactive AI Practices

The session was highly interactive, with participants engaging in hands-on exercises that demonstrated the practical application of AI tools across the design thinking process:

  1. Creating a Stakeholder Map Using ChatGPT
    • Participants used ChatGPT to identify key stakeholders and map their roles and relationships effectively.
  2. Collecting Market Needs Using Social Listening
    • Teams applied social listening tools to gather real-time market insights, ensuring alignment with customer desires and trends.
  3. Generating Innovative Ideas Using STORMZ and GITMIND
    • STORMZ was used for collaborative brainstorming, while GITMIND helped structure and refine creative ideas into actionable concepts.
  4. Managing the Innovation Process Using MIRO
    • MIRO, a collaborative digital whiteboard, was employed to streamline the innovation process from ideation to execution.
  5. Prototyping Using Artificial Intelligence and Computer Graphics
    • Participants explored AI tools and computer graphics software to rapidly create and visualize prototypes, enabling efficient testing and refinement.

Closing Remarks

The class concluded with an engaging Q&A session led by Mr. Chung and Ms. Yau, where participants reflected on their learnings and discussed the future of AI in design thinking. The event underscored the transformative synergy of human creativity and AI technologies, paving the way for innovative, impactful solutions to modern challenges.
